  HOW LONG DO I HAVE UNTIL I'VE SPENT UP EVERYONE'S GOODWILL   born in the evening of september fifth, her mother, anne, could hardly look at her. she wailed until her eldest and only son, peter, took the infant from her arms, shielding her away from her mother's scorn. they christened her molly josephine after anne's mother two weeks later, when her father, nicholas, could finally drag himself out of his office, clothed in a dress that was supposed to belong to her sister. peter held molly when she cried because the water was cold, not anne.

  BUT I THINK THERE'S A GOD AND HE HEARS EITHER WAY   despite always longing for a daughter, anne was tough on molly like she never was peter. while getting ready for grandma josephine's funeral, anne confessed, "you look just like she did. you have her curls, molly." molly couldn't understand and anne gave no further explaination, running the straightener through molly's hair until it sizzled. anne expected perfection and molly never argued, though she was never congratulated for it. but peter did. he took molly out for ice cream after every test, and she let him pretend that it was enough.

  THERE'S NO ONE LEFT BETWEEN MYSELF AND ME   molly was ten when peter left home for the final time, excommunicated from their community for daring to be different. molly screamed and chased his car down the street until her bare feet bled. father blackburn found her curled up underneath a tree, shaking like a leaf in the december air, and took her home. things were never the same. the house was always too empty, and church was always too lonely. when hands wandered, molly had no one to tell. she exceeded everyone's expectations in silence.

  MAYBE THE EMPTINESS IS JUST A LESSON IN CANVESES   molly passed her gcses with the best results in her school; she passed her a-levels with the best results in the area. anne begged molly not to go to university, so she didn't. she stayed behind and shared her loneliness with her best friend, olive. she partied and skipped church and longed to be somewhere else, anywhere else. at first, olive was going to move across continents with her. they made the plans, molly was accepted into the university of her choice, and they were going to restart their lives together. then, suddenly, olive changed their mind and left molly alone in the churchyard, crying into a bottle of vodka. molly moved to north america two months later, bitterly alone.
